Welcome to the Schererville Soccer Club! Whether this is your first time coaching or you’re returning for another exciting season, this guide will be your go-to resource. From pre-season preparations to your first practice and game, we’ve got you covered.
Thank You & Welcome!
First and foremost, congratulations and thank you for stepping up as a coach! Our club thrives because of dedicated volunteers like you, and we’re thrilled to have you on board. Your time and effort make a lasting impact on young athletes, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.
Before the Season Starts
You’ve taken on the role of Head Coach, Assistant Coach, or Team Parent—well done! Once registration wraps up, teams will be formed, and coaches will be assigned by the division commissioner. Ideally, each team will have a Head Coach, Assistant Coach, and Team Parent to ensure smooth operations.
Next Steps Once You Receive Your Roster
About two weeks before the season begins, you’ll receive your team roster via email. Here’s what to do next:
✅ Reach out to parents via phone or group email. Be sure to include:
- Your name and role
- Team name & division
- Team color
- Practice days, times, and location (park & field number)
This helps set expectations and builds excitement for the season! Below will be a Welcome Letter to send to your team if you need help!
Your First Practice: Setting the Tone for Success
Your first practice is crucial—it sets the foundation for the entire season. Here’s how to make it a great experience for everyone:
1. Start with Introductions
- Introduce yourself, your assistant coach, and the Team Parent to both players and parents.
2. Warm-Up with Free Play
- Let the kids warm up by kicking the ball around while you take a moment to connect with parents.
3. Share Your Season Goals
- Keep it simple: "Our primary goal is to have fun while learning soccer!"
4. Prioritize Safety
- Review the lightning policy and emergency procedures so everyone knows what to do in bad weather.
5. What to Bring
- Ensure parents know what their child should bring to each practice:
- Water bottle (hydration is key!)
- Shin guards (mandatory for safety)
- Ball
6. Dress Code
- Review appropriate attire for practices and games.
7. Facility & Field Locations
- Help parents navigate where bathrooms, parking, and other important facilities are located.
8. Cancellation & Communication
- Explain the cancellation policy and how you’ll notify parents of any changes (email, text, or team app).
You’ve Got This!
Being a coach is an exciting and rewarding experience. You’re not just teaching soccer—you’re building confidence, teamwork, and a love for the game. Thank you for making a difference!
Let’s have a fantastic season! ⚽👏
